Osaka University He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Osaka University, and was appointed an Assistant Professor in that department in 1974. In 1988, he moved to the Department of Microbiological Disease as Associate Professor. Ten years later, he established his own laboratory as Full Professor at Osaka University's Genome Information Research Center. In 2002, he took on the additional responsibility of heading the Quarters for Experimentally Infected Animals at the adjacent Research Institute for Microbiological Diseases. His research interests include the mechanism of fertilization, which aggressively employs genetically-manipulated animals. He continues to utilize the Green Fluorescent Protein, which he introduced to the research world through the now-famous “green mouse.” He sees future uses of GFP as including organ and stem cell transplantation.
