Cristian O'Flaherty

McGill University and The Research Institute, McGill University Health Centre, QC, Canada

  • This delegate is presenting an abstract at this event.
McGill University Cristian O’Flaherty graduated from University of Buenos Aires, Argentina with a DVM and PhD in animal physiology and biochemistry degrees. During his postdoctoral training at McGill University, he characterized new phosphorylation events associated with human sperm capacitation and performed studies on the impact of chemotherapy on sperm chromatin structure of cancer survivors. Dr O’Flaherty is assistant professor in the Surgery Department (Urology Division), Faculty of Medicine, McGill University and medical scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is dedicated to the study of biology of male reproduction. He has been studying sperm function in many animal models including bovine, equine, porcine, canine species and in humans. Dr O’Flaherty conducted studies regarding the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and specific dehydrogenases in the activation of bull spermatozoa and the impact of exogenous antioxidants to improve cryopreservation protocols in many domestic animals species. The main goal of his research program at the Royal Victoria Hospital, MUHC is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms allowing the production of healthy spermatozoa. Particularly, his research focuses on the redox regulation by reactive oxygen species triggering and modulating these mechanisms during spermatogenesis, epididymal maturation and sperm activation. Recently, Dr O’Flaherty has made contributions on new antioxidant enzymes called peroxiredoxins and their involvement in the physiology of human spermatozoa and their impairment in male infertility.
