Osaka University Born in Osaka, Japan 1969. I graduated from Osaka University with BSc, MSc and PhD in pharmacology. I did 2 years of postdoctoral research at the Salk Institute, San Diego. I returned to Osaka University in 2002 and became an Associate Professor in 2004 and a Professor in 2012 at Research Institute for Microbial Diseases. I was awarded the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Prize in 2013. My research interest is to elucidate the mechanism of mammalian reproduction system in vivo using gene manipulated animals. In 1997, I generated testis specific endoplasmic reticulum chaperone, Clgn, knockout mouse that is male sterile due to defective sperm migration through utero-tubal junction and binding to oocyte extracellular matrix, zona pellucida. Since then I have a long track record of pursuing reproductive biology research using gene manipulated animals. During my postdoctoral research, I learned the lentiviral vector technology and applied it for the study of spermatogenesis. By trandcucing fertilized eggs and blsastocyst stage embryos, I developed the transgenic mice generation method and the placenta specific gene manipulation method, respectively. Applying this method, we further established the preeclampsia model mice. My recent interest is the application of CRISPR/Cas for the generation of gene edited mice to study fertilization, implantation, and placentation.
